This is a short video promoting the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union’s (AMWU) Design, Build & Maintain Our Ships Here campaign. As a maritime nation surrounded by oceans and possessing a cutting edge shipbuilding industry with world class skills and high standards of production, various workers, engineers and union officials talk of the importance of maintaining continuity of production in the face of an inconsistent project pipeline.
Focused on the importance of maritime defence, the video is primarily focused on ship building for the Royal Australian Navy and features extensive footage of naval vessels at sea and under construction. With 48 naval vessels needed over the next 30 years, the campaign argues that these vessels should not be purchased off the shelf from abroad, but designed, built and maintained in Australia.
